Mission/Action Statements of the Social Action Committee

Mission Statement
The mission of the SAC is to coordinate social action programs, including participation in community projects; direct service; exploration of social, economic and environmental justice issues; and taking action according to Unitarian Universalist principles.

The following are examples of current and past SAC activities.
 
Community Projects

  • Joining in the upcoming October 15 Abilities Beyond Disabilities/WeCAHR walk to help broaden participation by people with disabilities in the community.
  • Hosting a luncheon to support the expansion of the Rapid Response Network which identifies and responds to hate acts in the Danbury area.
  • Voter registration drive, 2004.

Direct Service

  • Dorothy Day Soup Kitchen.
  • Holiday food drives.
  • Collecting supplies for victims of Hurricane Katrina, 2005.

Exploration of social, economic and environmental justice issues

  • Investigation of the process for becoming a “Green Congregation.”
  • Jubilee I, a weekend-long anti-racism program, 2005.
  • Forum on Global Climate Change, 2005.
  • Screening of the film Wal-Mart: the High Cost of Low Prices, 2005.
  • Presentation of Trumpet of Freedom, a live-theater production based on the life and writings of the abolitionist John Brown, 2006.
  • Fulfilling our Mission: Welcoming Diversity, an eight-week adult religious education class examining and challenging ageism, racism, heterosexism, and ableism.

Taking action

  • Sunday Service on UU Principles and Human Rights.
  • Collecting postcards for the Million Voices for Darfur campaign, 2006.
  • Sunday Service on the theme When a Family Member Comes Out, 2006
  • Participation in actions supporting marriage equality for same-sex couples including a march in Hartford, door-to-door canvass and house meetings with legislators, 2004-2006.
  • Protesting the inaugural meeting in Danbury of the CT Citizens for Immigration Control.
  • Joining the Danbury Unity March supporting immigrants’ rights and calling for comprehensive immigration reform, 2006.
