From the Board of Trustees
by LouAnn Heller, Trustee
As a new member of UUCD (I signed the book in March of this year) I wanted very much to fully understand the workings of the congregation. So, when approached in May and asked to be on the Board I thought what better way to learn than to attend the Board meetings.
The first new task assigned to me was to write a column for the November Comment. I’m not much of a writer and really didn’t know where to begin, so I logged onto the member portal and read some back issues of the Boards articles in the Comment.
Doing so I was struck by the variety of themes each month, from the very personal life history story to the very analytical review of Board business. But always the love and commitment to UUCD came through.
So, what should I write about?
First the analytical:
The Board is addressing last year’s budget deficit full on. The supplemental pledge was successful with a total of over $14,000. Donated to help close the budget gap. Though more is needed, the generosity of the UUCD community is exceptional.
The work of the The Palestine/Israel Study group was successful in educating our members to the ground truth of what is happening in Gaza. Overwhelmingly, the congregation voted to sign onto the statement condemning the Israeli genocide of the Palestinian people.
UUCD continues to support Danbury Unites for Immigrants through the tireless work/leadership of Rev. Sierra-Marie, Margaret Henderson and others.
As this was written before the annual auction fund raising event, I can’t report what a success it was, but I can report that having attended last year’s auction it was one of the most enjoyable evenings I ever attended.
On the personal:
Becoming a grandmother in August has been amazing. And the world has suddenly become a much scarier place. As I work for a better world for my little Henry to grow up in. I’m so glad I found this community. From the Chalice Circle with Rev. Tony, the women’s discussion group, committee meetings and even the board work, I’ve found such positive energy. Following each Sunday service, I’ve felt grounded and stronger, and the week/work ahead is not so scary.
