From the Board of Trustees

by Margaret Henderson, President

As I write this it’s a cold, snowy day in January, but the Board is considering a proposal from the UUCD kids to build a playground. The children have thought about what kind of equipment they want, and how to make it accessible to kids with disabilities. They even had fundraising ideas! There is more research to be done, but the Board of Trustees would like to thank Mazie Volovski for bringing this idea to us.

This is an example of how we CAN build personal connections between kids and adults at UUCD – something that I think is vital to our future. When REMT changed their name to the Family Ministry Team last year, they were saying that kids – and parents – are and must be an integrated part of our congregational life. If the children and youth program is soloed off in its own area with its own adult caregivers, everyone suffers the loss. UUCD needs more bridges between generations, more events like old-fashioned picnics were, where kids AND adults can be engaged and have fun side by side.

As the Board considers this, we are exploring the idea of “co-ministry,” or making use of Sierra-Marie’s skills as an ordained minister and making her a co-minister with Rev. Tony. This would be a big change and we are only starting to ask if it makes sense in our situation. But it’s possible that UUCD would benefit if Rev. Tony and Rev. Sierra-Marie, both half-time employees, were to shift some duties around to maximize their strengths.

If you have questions you’d like us to look into as we explore this, please let a Board member know.
