From the Board of Trustees

From the Board of Trustees

by Jean Kannan, Trustee

I’m Jean and the UUCD’s newest Board Member, and a one year member of the Congregation. I’d like to share some random thoughts, personal thoughts.

A few years ago I was feeling the need to belong, to find a deeper meaning in my life and in the world. I trolled UUCD’s website for a while and finally decided to take the plunge. In November 2024 I tentatively walked into the UUCD, not knowing what to expect……Was it the sort of religious organization I’ve long since shied away from? Was it some sort of cult? Were they scary opinionated people who find fault with diversity, women’s rights and justice for all?

It was, and is, none of those. I found a warm, welcoming environment, full of people with varying beliefs, all coming together to “think for ourselves and reflect together about life’s big questions and how to live our values in the world.”

I was hooked that first day. I couldn’t wait to go back the following week. Then the next and the next. I wanted to be a part of this amazing group of individuals.

I was approached by the Caring Circle to become a member. I quickly said yes. When the Sunday Coffee Hour needed a kitchen person, I volunteered.

However, a few months later I was approached about filling a vacancy on the Board; I was very hesitant. I was too new and learning so much about the UUCD, how could I fill a seat on the Board? What could I offer? What did I know? I felt like a second grader being asked to speak at a high school graduation; it’s just not possible.  Since you are reading this, you know how that turned out.

“How’s that going?” you might ask. I am still learning. A lot. But it has helped me to have a deeper connection to the Congregation. I’m learning how much goes into the smooth running of the UUCD from the Sunday Service, to Family Ministry, the music, the choir, coffee hour and too many programs to mention. This is all made possible by the help of the members of the Congregation. Because there are so many helping hands working together, UUCD is able to provide many opportunities to be involved, to join the Women’s Gathering, Men Conversing over Coffee, the Palestine Solidarity Committee, the Chalice Circle, Movies With a Message….by the way, this month’s Yellow Submarine was amazing!…, Music at the Ridge…..please come once and you’ll be hooked!…, the Auction, Trunk or Treat, book clubs, protesting the horrific events from Washington, helping our immigrant friends and neighbors, and so very much more.

We welcome every member, every visitor, every potential member. If you’re new, or a long time member,  and want to be involved, approach a Board member and we can direct you. Or just stop us and say “Hi”.

As I said, I’m relatively new, so if we haven’t met, I’d love to meet you.
